Imagine what your life would be like if you knew that the moment you entered a room, people would immediately take notice, want to hear what you have to say, and be eager to earn your approval.

For charismatic people, this is a day in their life.

Whether you think you have a bit of charisma and would like to take it to the next level or if you feel like you just aren’t the charismatic type, I have good news: charisma is a learnable skill that you can practice.

The Powerplay of Charisma

Charisma isn’t merely about drawing attention. It's a superpower that rearranges the social landscape. Picture this: You become a magnet for positive regard, trust, and leadership. People just can't help but align themselves with your ideas and missions.

Believe it or not, charisma isn't solely about personal charm; it’s the driving force behind your career advancements, job applications, and promotions. Research consistently highlights the impact—charismatic individuals not only receive high performance ratings but also tend to be perceived as more effective by both their peers and higher-ups.

As Wharton School business professor Rober House notes, charismatic leaders” cause followers to become highly committed to the leaders missions, to make significant personal sacrifices and to perform about and beyond the call of duty.”

Unveiling the Charisma Myth

Despite popular belief, charisma isn’t an inborn trait exclusive to a select few. Even those who seem naturally magnetic have their "off" days. Take Marilyn Monroe, for example—she had the power to switch her charisma on and off like a lightbulb.

You might recall those moments when you felt invincible, commanding the room with sheer confidence. People marvelled at your presence, applauding your performance. We don’t usually consider ourselves to be charismatic in these scenarios because we believe charismatic people are magnetic all the time, but it's simply not true.

It’s a Skill, Not Sorcery

Charisma isn’t an elusive magic trick; it’s a craft you can develop. Much like a magician honing their illusions, mastering the art of charisma involves a mix of body language, communication, and presence.

When we first meet someone we asses instinctively if that person is a potential friend or foe and if they have the power to act out those intentions. Basically we ask ourselves, “Could you move mountains for me? And would you care to do so?” To answer the first question we are assessing their power.  To answer the second question we are considering how much they like us. We you meet a charismatic person you get the impression that they have a lot of power and they like you a lot.

The simple charisma equation: give the impression that you possess both high power and high warmth.
